Literature and Memory

On the occasion of the death or birth anniversaries of significant Greek writers, the Thessaloniki International Book Fair organizes for the third consecutive year various events in order to honor important and at times under-studied Greek authors. This year, discussions will be focusing on the aspects and use of surrealism in the modern Greek poetry and fiction, and their mark on the contemporary works of Nanos Valoritis (1921-2019), Giorgos Cheimonas (1938-2000), Hector Kaknavatos (1920-2010), Andreas Pagoulatos (1946-2010) and Thanasis Tzoulis (1932-2010), as well as on the extraordinary power of women writers in Greece in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Kallirhoe Parren (1861-1940), Mimika Kranaki (1920-2008), Maria Polydouri (1902-1930), Mellisanthi (1907-1990), Niki Rebecca Papageorgiou (1948-2000), Nora Anagnostaki (1930-2013), Tatiana Gritzi Milliex (1920-2005). In two special events, academics, scholars and writers look at certain dimensions of the work of these writers and discuss why their literary writings are very important today.
